They’re a break or flat spot in the waves and also appear as a white spot in the water that moves away from the shore.

What To Do if You’re Caught in a Rip Current

Getting caught in the rip current isn’t uncommon, though it is scary and can quickly become a dangerous situation. If you’re caught in one, the first thing to remember is to stay calm. It’s important to stay focused. Panicking will just wear you out. Swimming into the current (swimming in a straight line back to shore) will also wear you out and likely push you further out from the shore. Swim parallel to the shore until you feel the current break and it becomes easy to swim to shore.

Remember, rip current and riptide are two different things. A riptide is short-lived and if it takes you under the water, it likely won’t for long. A rip doesn’t pull you under, it pulls you away from the shore and is very difficult to swim or walk back towards the shore in. This is because water must flow back out towards the sea to level off.
